Tenants in the Atlanta metro area are talking about what they call missing rental assistance money.

They say state-issued rental funds have not been disbursed and this is a problem that has been going on for months.

Ashli ​​Lincoln, Channel 2 investigative reporter discovered that this doesn’t just happen to one tenant, it’s a problem that affects many families.

The state shows the money is being paid, but landlords and tenants say they are not getting the money.

Some tenants, like Ife Madyun, are now threatened with eviction because of this situation. She received a notice to leave, but says it can’t happen.

“It’s absolutely not an option,” Madyun said. “I don’t have a job, I can’t apply for another apartment.”

She says she and other metro Atlanta tenants face eviction after state-issued housing assistance funds disappear.

“The rental office says there are about 30-40 people still waiting for checks. What do we do ? Madyun said.

She says she asked for help after being fired.

His complex, the Vesta Adams Park Apartments in East Point, is supposed to receive the funds directly from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.

The state’s online portal shows the state paid Madyun’s claim for April and May rent, but a look at her apartment portal shows the money hasn’t. been paid.

Other tenants are speaking out on social media and sharing their frustrations. A tenant said five months passed before payments were received.

Madyun says her rental office has been transparent and helpful in trying to figure this out.

WSB-TV discovered that the complex is owned by Virginia-based Middleburg Communities. They sent us a statement, saying in part:

“We have worked hard with rental assistance programs as well as with our residents to facilitate payments. Eviction is a last resort after exhausting all other options.

We also emailed the regional director of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. They said they were looking into these allegations.

The company told Madyun that although the missed payment is not their fault, according to the law, they must still file a formal eviction request.
