Trouser and t-shirt suit, Cos. Bag, Loewe and loafers, Gucci
I feel so excited about fashion and its endless possibilities for all of us right now. A dramatic statement to make on a Sunday morning, but it’s true.
As women of all ages in 2022 – none of that “I’m too old” nonsense! – we have so much at our fingertips if we just choose to embrace it. Why? Because a liberating revolution is underway: gender and age barriers are challenged and broken, while the rise of the rental market and pre-loved fashion allow us to wear brands we could never dream of offering us.
That’s why I now find myself in the men’s section of Cos browsing its cotton T-shirts, which are much more fitted than its women’s versions (Arket’s men’s cashmere is also always prettier than its women’s). I’m also eyeing the bare-bellied Khaite dress online that Maggie Gyllenhaal, 44, wore to stunning effect last month, and feel inspired to wear a similar one while vacationing in France this summer.
And, with a big occasion coming up, I scoured the rails of a favorite thrift store to find the right dress, which I’ll proudly advertise as second-hand. I recently found a special from Israeli designer Yigal Azrouël for a trip to Ascot.
Another sign of our changing times was a visit to Connolly in Mayfair. This classic British brand was once best known as a supplier of leather goods to the automotive industry. Today, in addition to menswear, his selection of bespoke women’s suits is to die for, and a great example of how this summer we’ve got more to choose from than ever.
Invited to a summer wedding? Make this the year you switch things up and instead of a dress, consider wearing a pantsuit. Paired with heels, this classic look can be paired with any dress, skirt or top for a sophisticated allure.
Here’s how I style mine…
For freshness outside working hours Pair your pantsuit with a white t-shirt and loafers and, for the finishing touch, add a chunky gold chain necklace. Pantsuits are also smart and casual with sneakers.
For wow work clothes The pantsuit is an ideal option for the office. If you’re buying more than one suit, opt for shades that can be mixed and matched with each other, and pair your suit blazers with other pieces such as a maxi pencil skirt.
For evening glamor replace your T-shirt with a satin camisole or blouse. Or just button up your jacket with nothing underneath. Wear with rhinestone chandelier earrings and strappy or platform sandals.
