The internet has backed a woman after she claimed she ruined dinner with a joke about her own bodily fluids with a commenter calling it “pretty funny”.

Posted on the 3.9 million person ‘Am I the Asshole’ Reddit forum, user u/Cheap_Extension5015 shared the story of the prank that the poster claims ruined a family dinner.

Since being uploaded to the forum on Saturday April 30, the post – which can be viewed here – has managed to rack up some 15,900 upvotes.

According to a January 2022 study published in the journal Evolutionary Psychological Science, men and women reported experiencing more conflict with their mothers-in-law compared to their own mothers, at 44% and 39% respectively.

The poster explained that their in-laws had been invited to dinner but said they had a very specific requirement that the food be organic.

In the post, the user said, “I cooked a few dishes including a French Onion Soup. The soup was a hit. Her mum asked me for a recipe and I jokingly said that the secret ingredient was my tears (because onions).

“His mother stopped eating, shared with me. I tried to ease the tension by explaining that it was a joke, but she did not respond. After a few minutes, they got up and left .”

The user continued, “I knew she was strict about where her food came from, making sure it was organic and non-GMO etc. We actually went shopping with her before dinner. to reassure her. But I didn’t realize an obvious onion joke would anger her. My husband tried to get her to talk to me, but she refuses.

Unsurprisingly, the post drew hundreds of comments, with many expressing their exhaustion over the behavior of the mother-in-law.

One Reddit user said: “NTA [not the a**hole]. It’s actually a pretty funny joke and even though she didn’t get it initially, she should have been receptive to your explanation. It sounds like pain.”

Another commenter added: “I’m exhausted for you. Has she ever heard the idiom of putting your ‘blood sweat and tears’ into something? You obviously didn’t put any fluids bodily in his food.

“Either she’s always like that, or she doubles down because she doesn’t want to admit she didn’t get the joke.”

A third posted: “NTA. Could she have been p**sed that your food was better so looking for an excuse to leave because she’s jealous?”
